How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In New York, 18–20% of the bill is the usual range for table service, and 20% is a safe default. Use a higher figure for unusually attentive service or a large group.
Should I tip on the pre-tax subtotal or the after-tax total?
Either is accepted; tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the stricter reading, and tipping on the after-tax total is simpler and slightly more generous. This calculator asks you to choose, so the number is never ambiguous.
